From benchmark reproduction to a semiclassical-gravity laboratory
B1 does not establish an Astral Gate. B1 asks whether the numerical instrument we intend to use for much harder spacetime questions can correctly reproduce a known quantum stress-energy benchmark.
Current comparison is the repaired scalar trace at r = 6M. The historical B1 lane stays conformal. See the scalar study and the public Mτ study.
B1 is not
a portal test
B1 is
calibration of the scientific instrument required to test the semiclassical physics of candidate spacetimes.
B1 unlocks trust in the instrument, not belief in the hypothesis.
The instrument
Astral Gate needs more than candidate metrics or theoretical stress-energy tensors written down by assumption.
The long-term computational target is an independently validated numerical engine capable of calculating the renormalized quantum stress-energy tensor ⟨Tμν⟩ren for quantum fields on curved spacetime backgrounds.
The left side describes spacetime curvature. The right side describes the quantum stress-energy sourcing it. Displayed form is a minimal schematic, not the uniquely complete equation.
In semiclassical gravity, the renormalized stress tensor tells us how quantum fields carry energy density, pressure, flux, and vacuum polarization in curved spacetime. That is one of the quantities needed to determine whether quantum matter can actually support — or destroy — a proposed geometry.
Difficulty
The naive quantum stress tensor is divergent. A number that merely looks interesting is not a result.
A trustworthy ⟨Tμν⟩ren calculation requires regularization and renormalization, Hadamard subtraction, quantum mode sums, special functions, high-mode asymptotics, horizon boundary conditions, a definite quantum state, numerical convergence, tensor conservation, trace-anomaly checks, and independent normalization checks.
A tensor that merely produces interesting numbers is not enough. It must also conserve, converge, obey the appropriate trace relation, and reproduce independent benchmarks.
B1 — calibrating the instrument
B1 currently validates a very specific target: a particular field, coupling, state, spacetime, and numerical formulation. The historical benchmark lane is conformally coupled. The 9 October trace comparison is minimal coupling at one radius and is not a relabeling of that lane. Passing B1 would validate that benchmark implementation. The engine must then be expanded and tested before claiming broad generality. B1 is calibration point one, not a universal certification.
What B1 means today
Engine under validation
PARTIALModern Hartle–Hawking clean-room. Older radial, Hadamard, φ², and derivative stamps keep their dates. The current trace claim is only the r=6M empirical comparison. Four-point RSET remains HOLD.
CNG window and global structure
NARROW PASS · NOT GLOBAL21 September: this pipeline’s predeclared oscillation passed on ω∈[10.40,10.90]. 20 September discovery grades stay, including D=FAIL. Global structure is not established. Not HH RSET.

PARTIAL · NOT CLAIMEDHistorical lane: Schwarzschild, Hartle–Hawking, massless conformal scalar. October trace lane: minimal coupling, one radius. Reproduction of the full tensor is not claimed.
Trace / Ward / Abel
r=6 EMPIRICAL · WARD HOLD · ABEL FALSEThe October residual is covered only by a combined empirical allowance, mostly inherited from PMR. The scalar-only allowance does not cover it. Ward remains HOLD. Infinite-support Abel is not validated.

B1 PASS would mean: we trust the measuring instrument enough to begin asking harder questions. It would not mean: we have demonstrated a traversable gate.
What B1 unlocks
Test whether the same engine behaves correctly under different quantum-state boundary conditions.
Show that the engine is not accidentally specialized to one Schwarzschild benchmark.
Feed a candidate Astral Gate / throat geometry into the engine. Ask what quantum stress tensor actually occurs. Do not prescribe the exotic stress tensor by hand. Calculate it.
If the engine becomes trustworthy, we can ask
From a field on a geometry to a field that changes the geometry
Initially we calculate a quantum field on a frozen geometry: geometry → quantum stress tensor.
Ultimately semiclassical gravity requires feedback. The geometry determines the quantum stress; the quantum stress determines the geometry.
The ultimate question is not merely “Can I draw a metric with a throat?” It is: can spacetime and the quantum stress tensor coexist self-consistently?
The iteration either converges toward a self-consistent semiclassical spacetime, destabilizes, collapses, develops a horizon, violates admissibility constraints, or fails for another physical reason. All outcomes are scientifically useful.
Locked. Not a current calculation. Not a claimed result.
A semiclassical-gravity laboratory
If the project successfully generalizes the validated engine, the long-term instrument could become a computational laboratory for testing quantum fields on curved spacetime. B1 is calibration point one, not a universal certification.
What if Astral Gate doesn’t work?
If every candidate Astral Gate geometry ultimately fails, the validation work can still produce useful science.
A trustworthy semiclassical stress-tensor engine can test black holes, quantum states, exotic compact objects, wormhole proposals, and other curved-spacetime problems.
Reliable NO answers are scientifically valuable. Showing that a proposed geometry cannot be supported by an admissible quantum stress tensor is a result, not a failure.
The instrument does not need Astral Gate to succeed in order to be useful.
A validated open semiclassical-gravity numerical instrument could be useful independently of Astral Gate. It could help reproduce and audit quantum stress tensors around black holes, test proposed exotic geometries, study semiclassical backreaction, benchmark numerical QFT methods, and expose subtle implementation or source-convention problems. The project's value therefore does not depend entirely on producing a traversable gate.
This is already happening — and it is paused as a live lane
While attempting to validate B1, the project isolated an externally reviewable potential sign inconsistency in a displayed mixed-time derivative formula. That issue has been separated from the Astral Gate production code and remains paused and unconfirmed. It is not the live frontier. The current numerical comparison is the 9 October repaired scalar trace at r=6M under an empirical allowance.
This is an example of why benchmark validation matters. Building the instrument can expose problems and clarifications useful to the wider field before the instrument is ever applied to a novel Astral Gate geometry. A paused literature question is not a confirmed literature error, and PMR method progress is not a B1 PASS.

We are not at Level 4 or above. B1 itself is PARTIAL. A narrow CNG window pass and a narrow published-curve comparison are not a B1 pass. The current open work is remainder control, neighboring traces, then tensor components. GATE = NO.
If B1 passes
It would mean the project's modern clean-room Hartle–Hawking stress-tensor implementation has survived its benchmark validation criteria strongly enough to become a trusted baseline for the next research stages. It would not prove a portal, wormhole, exotic-matter source, or traversable geometry.
If B1 fails
Then we continue debugging or replace the method. No novel Astral Gate calculation should be trusted until the benchmark foundation is repaired.
General relativity allows us to write many mathematically interesting metrics. That does not mean nature supplies the required stress-energy tensor. The instrument is intended to ask: does an admissible quantum field actually produce what this geometry requires?

For expert readers
⟨Tμν⟩ren is the expectation value of the quantum field’s stress-energy after the state-independent ultraviolet divergence has been subtracted. In semiclassical gravity it is the source that could curve spacetime. The project’s B1 target is one concrete numerical realization of this object, not a universal quantum-gravity solver.
The Hadamard parametrix encodes the universal short-distance singularity of the two-point function. The historical m=6 layer passed under the implementation then in force. October 9 found that a blanket massless skip omitted nonzero log and rational-tail coefficients. That layer is not an RSET pass, and it is not the current universal subtraction claim.
Covariant conservation, ∇μ ⟨Tμν⟩ren = 0, is a non-negotiable check on a renormalized stress tensor in the absence of external sources. Trace can pass while Ward remains HOLD. The project does not treat conservation as optional bookkeeping.
For a massless conformally coupled field the renormalized trace is fixed by the conformal anomaly. That is the historical B1 lane. The 9 October comparison uses minimal coupling and the relation trace(T) = −Box(φ²)/2 + M²/(60 π² r⁶). Those are different checks. A conformal trace pass does not certify the minimal one, and neither is full tensor validation.
These are distinct quantum states on black-hole spacetimes, differing by their boundary conditions at the horizon and infinity. Hartle–Hawking is thermal in both Kruskal wedges; Boulware is empty at infinity and singular on the horizon; Unruh interpolates. B1 currently targets Hartle–Hawking. Other states are later calibration, not current claims.
Quantum fields can violate classical energy conditions, but not arbitrarily. Quantum energy inequalities bound how negative the energy density can be, for how long, and over what region. A local negative component of Tμν is not a license for a macroscopic exotic-matter throat.
ANEC constrains the integral of the null-null stress along complete null geodesics. Many traversable-wormhole constructions require ANEC violation. Whether an admissible quantum state can produce that violation at the required scale is a calculation, not a drawing.
The semiclassical Einstein equation asks for a metric whose Einstein tensor matches the renormalized stress of the quantum state defined on that same metric. Solving it is an iterative, constrained problem. A fixed-background RSET is the first instrument; a self-consistent solution is a later, harder target.
Public summary
Astral Gate's immediate objective is not to build a portal. It is to build and validate the numerical instrument required to determine whether candidate gate-like spacetimes survive quantum field theory at all. B1 is the first major calibration of that instrument. If B1 and subsequent benchmarks pass, the engine can move from known spacetimes to unknown ones — calculating the quantum stress tensor, testing conservation and energy conditions, and eventually solving the semiclassical backreaction problem. If those geometries fail, the same instrument can still be useful for black-hole physics, curved-spacetime quantum field theory, wormhole tests, and reproducibility research.
B1 does not establish an Astral Gate. B1 asks whether the numerical instrument we intend to use for much harder spacetime questions can correctly reproduce a known quantum stress-energy benchmark.
